'Shookt' millennials rally vs. tyranny, killings at Luneta

Millennials took to the streets on Thursday and joined the mass protest against tyranny at Rizal Park, taking with them the wit that earns hearts and likes on social media.

The clever tweet or status on Facebook has turned into protest signs, along with new calls that might ring truer for the generation that grew up without hearing "Marcos, Hitler, Diktator, Tuta."

"Tama na, sobra na!" has been replaced with "Shookt is an understatement" and while "Bayan Ko" remains the anthem of the revolution, songs from Lin Manuel Miranda's hit musical "Hamilton" are striking the right chords for the youth.

The witty signs were a hit during the rally, the crowd cheering loudly whenever the hosts read them out loud.

Some of the kids who made them were part of youth groups and alliances, while other students from various universities also attended.

Keith Aaron, 23, said that "millennial speak" actually help spread awareness because important messages were being spread in a language they understand.

"Millennials using their own language, yun yung maganda," he told GMA News Online.

"Nagiging aware ang kabataan, ang millennial generation," he added.

Aaron himself made a placard which read "#Ravan para sa bayan."

But behind their amusing signages is a genuine frustration over the injustices happening today.

Kristinne Felix, 23, rued what she called "blind" followers of the administration.

"Pinapatay na nila ang mga tao, bakit sobrang support pa rin sila?" she said.

She added that just because she wasn't alive during the martial law period doesn't mean that she can't understand the gravity of what happened then.

"Kahit naman sabihin natin na hindi pa ako buhay noon, it doesn't mean it's impossible that it won't happen again," she said.

"It's important that you know what happened then because it could happen again...nagsimula na nga eh," she added.

According to organizers, more than 30,000 have converged at Rizal Park on Thursday as various groups join the call to #StopTheKillings and fight for democracy on the 45th anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law. —Photos by Jessica Bartolome and Sandra Aguinaldo with reporting by Aya Tantiaco/JST, GMA News
