Poe to Mocha: Don’t share posts without vetting sources of info

Senator Grace Poe on Wednesday advised Communications Assistant Secretary Mocha Uson to double-check sources of information she shares on her Facebook page, Mocha Uson Blog.

“I would like – from PCOO – especially you have a government post – to vet your sources. It doesn’t mean that if it’s published by a particular site that it would reliable,” Poe said during the Senate public information committee hearing on the proliferation of fake news.

“We have to do double vetting for those things,” Poe said.

Poe cited Uson’s previous post wherein US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley was quoted to have said that President Rodrigo Duterte should be allowed "space to run his nation."

“Ikaw may mga nabibiktima sa’yo. Nabiktima ako. Ikaw nabibiktima rin. Papaano? Dahil nagku-quote ka ng news galing sa fake news site,” Poe told Uson.

Uson explained that she initially shared a report published by a daily newspaper but deleted the same post when she found out that the news item was inaccurate.

Poe also questioned Uson on a news article the latter shared on her page, which said that 95 out of 105 nations at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) commended the Philippines for its human rights record.

The article was published by state-owned Philippine News Agency (PNA).

Poe meanwhile took note of a time Uson corrected a social media post. The said post was in relation to the tax evasion case filed against tobacco firm Mighty Corp.

Uson wrongfully cited “Article 263 of the PH constitution” instead of the Tax Code. She issued an erratum over her post.

“Na-correct mo naman yung sarili mo pero ito nga, dapat siguro nagtutulungan tayo na hindi dapat nagpo-post ng hindi natse-tsek kasi you have the resources in your hand to validate these,” Poe told Uson. —KBK, GMA News
