CBCP: The Church is not plotting against Duterte

The Catholic Church over the weekend said it is not plotting to destabilize the government and the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte.

Jerome Secillano said in a radio interview about the Church's scheduled activity for November 5, "Lord Heal Our Land Sunday."

The activity will launch a month-long prayer period for the victims of extrajudicial killings.

Secillano said that the event should not be seen as a planned uprising against the government. "Hindi po ganun 'yon," he said.

This comes after Duterte on Friday threatened to declare a revolutionary government, accusing his critics of "destabilization" attempts.

In the interview, Secillano clarified that the Catholic Church supports the administration, but does not support the killings in the government's campaign against illegal drugs.

So 'yun ang isang napakalaking concern ng simbahan," he said.

"There are killings everywhere, so we need to do something about that," Secillano added.

Recently, Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano that all the 3,800 individuals killed by the police during anti-illegal drug operations were drug dealers who fought back.

— Jon Viktor D. Cabuenas/BM, GMA News
