BI to deploy additional 100 personnel at int’l airports for holiday season

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) will deploy additional 100 personnel at international airports nationwide next month in time for the expected influx and exodus of many travelers during the holiday season.

Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente said Tuesday the bureau is only waiting for the Department of Justice to release the appointment papers of the newly-hired 100 immigration officers before the month ends so they can train immediately and assume their posts this November.

Morente said several recruits were contractual employees “who have served the BI for many years.”

These employees were either by-passed or left out of the job selection process in previous years although they are qualified and have civil service eligibility.

“As we have stated before, it is about time that we recognize the services of these employees by rewarding them with permanent items in our plantilla,” the BI chief said.

With the hiring of additional personnel, Morente said he expected lesser passenger queues at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport’s immigration counters during the ASEAN summit and holiday season.

Morente also barred BI personnel from taking a leave of absence starting October 28 until January 15, 2018 to ensure uninterrupted service during the period. —ALG, GMA News
