Gradual reveal of SWS results a ‘piecemeal’ attack on PNP, says Bato

Philippine National Police Director General Ronald dela Rosa branded Social Weather Stations’ gradual release of its survey results a "piecemeal" attack against the PNP and the government's campaign against illegal drugs.

"Piecemeal attack ang ginagawa nila sa amin ah. Very obvious that's piecemeal attack. Nilabas na nila ‘yan noon pa pala sa survey, ngayon dahan-dahan na naman ilalabas, question by question, which is para bang naubusan na tayo ng bala na pantira sa PNP,” Dela Rosa said on Tuesday when asked to comment on the latest SWS survey result.

The SWS 3rd quarter survey, conducted from September 23 to 27, asked adult Filipinos if they believe that drug suspects killed in police operations really resisted arrest.

The respondents were asked to choose from the options given in this statement: "In the government’s campaign against illegal drugs, the police are (definitely telling the truth; probably telling the truth; undecided if telling the truth or not; probably not telling the truth; definitely not telling the truth) that the suspects they killed really resisted them.”

The poll showed 37 percent of the respondents say the police are not telling the truth, while 17 percent say police are telling the truth, and 45 percent are undecided.

The poll firm said this brings the net opinion about the truthfulness of the police—the percentage of those who believe the police subtracted from those who doubt them—to a significant -20.

In the July 2017 survey released in September, where 25 percent believed the police, 28 percent did not believe the police, 45 percent were undecided, the net balance of opinion was only -3.

Dela Rosa said he does not question the survey, but wonders why the results were released piece by piece.

“Ang pinagtataka ko nga lang bakit dahan-dahan nilalabas. Ibig sabihin ayaw nila pagpahingahin yung PNP? Umalis na nga kami diyan sa war on drugs, palabas pa rin kayo ng palabas ng mga question na matagal na na-settle a long time ago. What's the motive behind?

Anong motibo?” he said.

SWS timeline

Reached for comment, the poll taker said that it was not attacking the PNP.

"We have our own timeline that we follow regarding our releases," Vladymir Licudine, SWS director for Survey Design, Analysis and Training, told GMA News Online.

"The releases that we are doing now are more in depth than what we released last October 11. Aside from the PH results, the releases also include other demographic variables and cross tabulations of other items," Licudine added. — BM, GMA News
