DND, AFP chiefs assure Robredo: We won't support revolutionary gov't

The chiefs of the Department of National Defense (DND) and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) will not support the establishment of a revolutionary government, Vice President Leni Robredo said on Wednesday.

Defense chief Delfin Lorenzana and AFP chief Lt. Gen. Rey Leonardo Guerrero made the assurance after a briefing with her.

"Iyong isa sa pinakamahalaga doon sa briefing, in-assure tayo, in no uncertain terms, both ni Secretary Lorenzana saka ni AFP chief of staff Guerrero, na hindi sila susuporta sa revolutionary government at [sa] kahit anong threat sa ating Konstitusyon," she said.

Robredo's office had requested the briefing with officials to discuss rehabilitation efforts in war-torn Marawi City, where government forces fought terrorist groups during a five-month siege.

She said that the AFP and DND, which are actively involved in the rehabilitation of the city, gave a comprehensive briefing, which included details about the security situation of the country.

"Tinanong ko sila, sabi ko, 'Where does AFP stand dito sa lahat na usap-usapan doon sa revolutionary government?' Kasi medyo maugong ngayon," Robredo said.

"Pero this afternoon, na-assure tayo, at madiin iyong assurance na ibinigay sa atin na hindi sila susuporta sa ganiyan," she added.

President Rodrigo Duterte earlier threatened to establish a revolutionary government amid supposed attempts by his critics to destabilize his administration.

But his spokesperson at the time, Ernesto Abella, said that the President's remarks were just an "approach" to resolve the "country's endemic and structural problems hindering genuine progress."
