IN MEETING WITH RUSSIAN PM

Duterte vows comfy house, fair trial to Russian drug suspects

President Rodrigo Duterte has promised that he would provide a comfortable house and a fair trial for the two Russian drug smugglers detained in the Philippines.

"There are two nationals facing criminal cases in drug smuggling. It’s Mr. Yuri Kirdyushkin and Anastasia Novopashina. I would just like to say that we have a working functional justice system here and they will get a fair trial and that they will be detained in a comfortable house that… It’s not… It’s still under investigation," he told Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev during their bilateral meeting late Tuesday night.

"Whether true or not, we will find out but I will see to it that they are treated fairly and no additional stress on their person that will happen," he added.

Duterte won the 2016 presidential elections with a promise to address the narcotics trade, which gained criticisms globally because of the alleged killings of illegal drug suspects. —NB, GMA News
