Palace: Trudeau may have talked human rights with Duterte in private

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau must have taken up the issue of human rights with President Rodrigo Duterte in private, Malacañang said on Tuesday.

Trudeau in a news conference said he expressed to Duterte Canada's concern over the alleged human rights violations and extrajudicial killings in connection with the war on drugs in the Philippines.

Duterte and Trudeau had a bilateral meeting on Tuesday on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit and related meetings in Manila.

"If he did, he did so privately. Didn't hear it any of the public meetings," presidential spokesman Secretary Harry Roque said in a report on "24 Oras."

Roque on Monday said that the issue of human rights was not taken up in the bilateral meeting between Duterte and US President Donald Trump on Monday.

However, the White House, in its own briefer on the meeting, said the issue of human rights was taken up "briefly" in the context of the Philippines anti-drug campaign. —NB, GMA News
