SWS: 66% Pinoys satisfied with gov't efforts vs. Maute group


More than half of Filipinos were satisfied with the government's efforts in quelling the Maute Group, which occupied Marawi City for five months, the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey said.

The survey, which was conducted from September 23 to 27 among 1,500 Filipino adults, showed that 66 percent of Filipinos were contented with the government's action to suppress the Maute group while 18 percent were dissatisfied and 16 percent were undecided.

The results yielded a net satisfaction rating of "good" +48, a two-point decrease from the "very good" +50 in June.

Respondents were asked: "Gaano po kayo nasisisyahan o hindi nasisisyahan sa ikinikilos ng ating gobyerno ukol sa kanilang ginagawa upang masugpo ang grupong Maute na lumusob sa Marawi City?"

 


The government's net satisfaction in terms of neutralizing the Maute group remained "very good" in Metro Manila at +54, but slid by 14 points from June's +68.

It decreased by four points in Mindanao, but stayed in the "very good" classification at +54.

The Visayas' net satisfaction also remained "good" at +49, which was a three-point increase from +46 in June.

Balance Luzon hardly moved from +41 in June to +42 in September.

Satisfaction with Digong

Majority of the respondents are also satisfied with the performance of President Rodrigo Duterte and his administration in terms of fighting terrorism, particularly the Maute group, and reconciling with Muslim rebels.

Duterte's net satisfaction rating was a "very good" +67 among those who were "very satisfied" with the government's action in suppressing the Maute group.

He received a "very good" +52 among those were "somewhat satisfied." On the other hand, it was a "good" +37 among those who were "undecided," "moderate" +21 for those were "somewhat satisfied," and a "neutral" +6 among those who were "very dissatisfied."

Meanwhile, the national administration received a "very good" +67 net satisfaction rating from those who were "very satisfied" with the government's efforts in suppressing the Maute group.

It was a "very good" +58 among the "somewhat satisfied," "moderate" +25 for those "undecided," "moderate" +21 for "somewhat dissatisfied," and "neutral" -6 among those who were "very dissatisfied."

In terms of reconciling with the Muslim rebels, the administration got a "very good" +58 from those who were "very satisfied" with the government's actions in neutralizing the Maute group, and a "good" +44 from those who were "somewhat satisfied."

The survey also showed that the administration got a "moderate" +24 from the "undecided," "moderate" +12 from those who are "somewhat dissatisfied," and a "neutral" net zero for those who were "very dissatisfied."

Martial law in Mindanao

The September 2017 survey also found 54 percent of the respondents believed that government forces can suppress terror groups even without the implementation of martial law in Mindanao.

On the other hand, 22 percent were "undecided" and 25 percent have disagreed.

The results yielded a net agreement rating of "moderately strong" which is at +29. This slid by 3 points and one grade below from the "very strong" +32 rating in June 2017.

The net agreement was highest in Visayas, which was at "very strong" +36. It increased by 17 points from the "moderately strong" +19 in June 2017.

Metro Manila's rating, however, fell by one grade from June's "very strong" +36 to "moderately strong" +24 in September.

The net agreement in Mindanao fell by one grade at "moderately strong" +24 in September which was a 5-point decrease from +34 in June.

It also decreased by 5 points in Balance Luzon which is "moderately strong" +27.

The latest used the following terminology for the net satisfaction ratings: +70 and above, "excellent"; +50 to +69, "very good"; +30 to +49, "good"; +10 to +29, "moderate", +9 to –9, "neutral"; –10 to –29, "poor"; –30 to –49, "bad"; –50 to –69, "very bad"; –70 and below, "execrable".

It has sampling error margins of ±3% for national percentages, ±4% for Balance Luzon, and ±6% each for Metro Manila, the Visayas and Mindanao.

President Rodrigo Duterte announced in October that Marawi City had been freed from the Maute group.

However, the military said its troops continue to pursue a number of Maute group remnants still hiding within the city. —Marlly Rome Bondoc/ALG, GMA News
