Party-list group to honor intern who saved victim of MRT incident

The Kabayan party-list group will confer an award to the post-graduate medical intern who administered first aid to the woman whose right arm was severed in a Metro Rail Transit Line 3 incident last week.

In an advisory, the Kabayan said it would grant the "Kabayan Bayani Award" to medical intern Charleanne Jandic in a special ceremony to be held at Ayala Southpark, Alabang, Muntinlupa on Sunday afternoon.

The party-list said Jandic has confirmed attendance to the ceremony.

Jandic was at the MRT3 Ayala Station on her way to visit her aunt last Tuesday when 24-year-old Angeline Fernando fell onto the railway, a freak accident that severed her arm rolled over by the train's bogie .

The medical intern immediately applied first aid to Fernando before she was brought to the Makati Medical Center, where her arm was reattached only the following day.

Kabayan party-list Representative Ron Salo has said he would rename the Emergency Medical Services System bill that he had filed after Jandic in a bid to recognize her as a model of the compassionate and swift response to emergency medical services that should be delivered to Filipinos.

At the same time, Salo is hoping that Department of Transportation or MRT-3 officials should also identify all individuals who directly aided Fernando in order for them to be properly commended.

"Their swift, calm and proper response saved Ms. Fernando," he said.

Jandic, however, said she was only doing her obligation, as a physician-in-training, to help others in need.

"Ginawa ko lang po talaga 'yung dapat gawin," she said.

"If it was another person with training on how to handle situations like yesterday [at the station], they would have done the same thing," she added. —Erwin Colcol/LBG, GMA News
