Japanese destroyer pays PHL goodwill visit

A Japanese anti-submarine destroyer arrived in Manila Monday for a two-day goodwill visit and replenishment of supply from a mission in the ASEAN International Fleet Review.

Navy spokesperson Capt. Lued Lincuna said  their vessel BRP Rajah Humabon (PF11) rendered customary meeting procedures at Corregidor Island and escorted a Japan Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) vessel JS ONAMI (DD-111) to its designated anchorage area.

Navy representatives accorded the visiting navy a welcome ceremony upon arrival followed by a port briefing related to health and security aboard JS ONAMI.

Commander Hirotaka Okumura, commanding officer of JS ONAMI, and his party paid a courtesy call on Philippine Navy officials.

A send-off ceremony with customary Passing Exercise (PASSEX) will cap off upon their departure on Tuesday, November 28.

It is the third time a JMSDF vessel visited the country this year.

Similar goodwill visits were also conducted last January and June.

Lincuna said the visit aims to strengthen the strong relationship between the Navy and JMSDF.

He said it will further enhance and sustain the promotion of peace, stability, and maritime cooperation within the region. — Amita Legaspi/RSJ, GMA News
