Duterte calls Trillanes 'mukha talagang evil' while telling appointees not to become Judas

President Rodrigo Duterte took a swipe at his critic Senator Antonio Trillanes in a speech before the oath-taking of his new appointees, who the chief executive warned of not becoming a Judas.

In his speech, Duterte was retelling an anecdote of how Leonardo da Vinci finished painting The Last Supper.

"Ang ika-13th, si Hudas. Hinanap niya sa… sa lahat. Punta siya ng ganun, ganoon, ganoon but pag-uwi niya sa Florence, naghanap siya ng mukha talagang evil, pareho kay Trillanes na ‘yung… Naghanap siya ng mukha ni Trillanes. Wala man siya — wala pa man PMA noon. Though hindi niya ma — hindi niya mahanap," he said.

Duterte said Da Vinci found a scavenger as a model for Judas Iscariot, the apostle who betrayed Jesus Christ for 30 pieces of silver. His betrayal led to Jesus' arrest, crucifixion, and death.

"So pagdaan niya nakita niya, nakita niya, 'P— ina, Trillanes nga ito. Nandito lang pala eh. So he talked to him and said, 'Do not be insulted, but you know, I’m trying to complete my painting, the only person missing there, the face is Judas.' Sabi niya, 'You are not Judas.' Sabihin ko kay Trillanes ganoon, 'You are not the Judas,'" Duterte said.

"But sabi ni Da Vinci, 'You are a model for a face of evil.' Sabihin ko na rin… 'You are a model… a face of evil.' So, nakumbinsi niya at — ang pangit talaga eh. Garas-garas [Gasgas] dito ang mukha," he added.

Duterte said Da Vinci ended up using the same man as model for both Jesus and Judas without intending to do so.

“Sabi ng… ni ‘yung sa Hudas sa painting, ‘You know, Mr. da Vinci, I was once upon a time your Jesus Christ and you took — that is me there. ‘Yung — ngayon, you drew the… Ako ‘yun, nagkalat ako sa buhay. I am one and the same person,’” he said.

“So we all start with the noblest of intention, joining government,” he added.

Duterte's anecdote was meant to be a warning his new appointees not to betray the people.

“I hate to see you being a Jesus Christ, only to discover in the end that you are the Judas that I have been also looking for,” Duterte said.

Fact-checking site Snopes.com, however, has debunked the claim that Da Vinci used the same model for Jesus and Judas for his painting—JST, GMA News
