Paolo Duterte resigns as Davao City vice mayor

Davao City Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte has resigned from his post.

"I hereby tender my resignation as Vice Mayor of Davao City effective today, December 25, 2017," Duterte said in a speech during a special session of the city council on Christmas Day.

He mentioned his alleged involvement in the Bureau of Customs smuggling case and his public spat with his 17-year-old daughter, Isabelle. He said these were "unfortunate" incidents that were linked to his first marriage. He was then married to Lovelie Sangkola, whom he had three children with.

"There are recent and unfortunate events in my life that are closely tied to my failed first marriage. These, among others, include the maligning of my reputation in the recent name-dropping incident in the Bureau of Customs smuggling case and the very public squabble with my daughter," he said.

"The other person in this failed relationship is incorrigible and cannot be controlled. and I take responsibility for all that has happened as a result of a wrong decision to marry at a very young age," Duterte added.

Duterte also mentioned in his speech that his parents, President Rodrigo Duterte and Elizabeth Zimmerman, always reminded him of the importance of "delicadeza."

"When I was growing up, my parents never failed to remind me of the value of the time-honored principle of delicadeza," he said. "And this is one of the instances of my life that I need to protect my honor and that of my children."

In his Facebook page, the presidential son thanked all his supporters, especially his constituents.

"DAGHANG SALAMAT KANINYONG TANAN ug MAAYONG PASKO KANINYO [Thank you very much everyone and have a Merry Christmas]!" he said.

Duterte said he would delete the Facebook page by 3 p.m. — RSJ/KBK, GMA News
