Mayon Volcano alert levels explained

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLS) has raised Alert Level 2 over Mount Mayon after a phreatic eruption on Saturday afternoon.

Cedric Daep, head of the Albay Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office, said experts from PHIVOLCS have informed them that there is a big possibility of raising the alert level to 3 because of the volcano's increasing unrest.

As of this posting, the volcano has had three phreatic eruptions, emitting grayish steam, ash columns and sulfurous odor.

Aside from ash falls, PHIVOLCS has also recorded rockfall events in surrounding areas of the volcano.

Below is an infographic of how PHIVOLCS' classifies Mayon Volcano's level of activity.
