Fides Cordero Tan is new dean of UP Law


Lawyer Fides Cordero-Tan has been chosen as the new dean of the University of the Philippines-Diliman College of Law.

UP vice president for public affairs Jose Dalisay Jr. confirmed her appointment Friday with GMA News Online, saying it was a "unanimous decision" by the Board of Regents.

Tan was among five candidates considered for the deanship.

Other nominees include Education Undersecretary Alberto Muyot, Supreme Court spokesperson Theodore Te, former Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) School of Government dean Antonio La Viña, and UP law professor Elizabeth Aguiling-Pangalangan.

According to the profiles, Tan is a lecturer on evidence at the UP College of Law and a consultant for the Tan and Concepcion & Que Law Firm for litigation, tax, corporate and special projects, and property law.

Tan, who ranked 22nd in the 1982 Bar examinations, finished a degree in foreign service from UP, graduating cum laude in 1978.

She then completed her bachelor of laws from the UP College of Law, finishing cum laude in 1982.

Tan previously taught as an associate professor at UP Law, handling criminal procedure, corporate law, and insurance law. She was also president of the UP Women Lawyers Circle from 2010 to 2012.

Apart from Tan, the BOR on Friday also appointed two deans for the UP Visayas campus.

According to a report on the UPD website, Prof. Severa Fe Katalbas is the new dean of UP Visayas College of Arts and Sciences, while Prof. Encarnacion Emilia Yap will now head the UP Visayas College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences.

The board also renewed the three-year terms of UPD university librarian Chito Angeles and UP Los Baños College of Arts and Sciences dean Felino Lansigan. —NB/KBK, GMA News
