Robredo lawyer: Lorraine Badoy hardly credible to talk about ‘fake news’

The lawyer of Vice President Leni Robredo on Wednesday took a swipe at Presidential Communications Operations Office Undersecretary Lorraine Badoy for accusing the vice president of being a "purveyor of fake news."

"If this is the Lorraine Badoy who insisted that a high school class project was an 'LP publication,' and, when corrected, refused to accept her mistake and tried to bully Jillian Robredo and her high school classmates, then I hardly think she is the most credible person to talk about 'fake news'," lawyer Barry Gutierrez said in a statement.

"That this person is now in PCOO, though, is a very clear indicator of the kind of work it focuses on these days," he added.

Gutierrez was referring to the Badoy's Facebook post in December 2016 wherein the latter shared a photo of a magazine bearing the name "Bayani" with Robredo on the cover.

Badoy mistakenly thought that magazine came from the Liberal Party which Robredo chairs but it later turned out that it was school project of Robredo's daughter, Jillian.

During a Senate committee hearing on fake news, Badoy dismissed insinuations that "misleading" information come from supporters of President Rodrigo Duterte.

"The Vice President is one of the primary purveyors of fake news and the President may be an even bigger victim than she is," Badoy said. "For instance, she just said recently — she paints a gloomy picture of the country at a time in history where all important numbers are looking up."

During Tuesday's hearing, Badoy was also confronted by Senator Manny Pacquiao over her Facebook post about the house of the latter's supposed mistress which later turned out to be owned by Pacquiao's staff.

The PCOO official, however, defended her post, saying that it was made in reaction to a hurtful remark of Pacquiao on same-sex marriage. In February 2016, Pacquiao drew criticisms for saying that same-sex relationships are "masahol pa sa hayop."

She has then apologized to Pacquiao during the hearing, saying that blogging has taught her to be compassionate, decent, and fair. — RSJ, GMA News
