NBI ordered to explain why Taguba was not transferred to Manila jail

A regional trial court judge on Friday ordered the chief of the National Bureau of Investigation's custodial center to explain why Customs fixer Mark Taguba has not been transferred to the Manila City Jail despite her order.

Under Judge Rainelda Estacio-Montesa's show-cause order, Menardo Cariaga, head of the NBI's custodial center, has 48 hours upon receipt of the show-cause order to explain why they should not be cited in contempt for disobeying the court's order.

She ordered Taguba's transfer to the city jail on February 2, denying the Customs fixer's motion to continue to be detained at the NBI for lack of merit.

Montesa allowed Taguba to remain at the NBI pending the resolution of his motion for his continued detention there, but said she is not recalling her order.

Taguba's lawyer, Raymond Fortun, on Monday filed a very urgent motion for reconsideration which again appealed for his stay at the NBI, claiming a government official whom he had named at the Senate probe on the P6.4-billion shabu shipment and alleged Customs corruption last year wants him dead.

The prosecution has six days remaining to file its comment on the motion, but the judge said it should be submitted at the "earliest possible time."

Taguba and seven others charged for the importation of the controversial shabu shipment from China were ordered arrested on January 31. —KG, GMA News
