Tourism in two PHL island resorts face closure due to sewerage issues

Tourism in two other famous island resorts in the Philippines may be ordered closed due to improper waste disposal, a radio report said Thursday.

Super Radyo dzBB's Carlo Mateo reported on "Dobol B sa News TV" that tourism in Siargao Island in Surigao del Norte and Coron in Palawan would possibly be ordered closed if proper sewage disposal system is not observed in the resorts.

Sewage disposal systems in some resorts have been in the spotlight after President Rodrigo Duterte threatened to shut down world-famous tourist destination Boracay Island, describing it as a "cesspool," and urged authorities to address environmental issues in six months.

"I will close Boracay. Boracay is a cesspool," Duterte said during the Manila Times' Business Forum in Davao City last Friday.

The President said he has tasked Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu "to clean" Boracay.

Several local establishments in Boracay have already been served by the Department of Environment of Natural Resources non-compliance notices days after Duterte's "shut down" threat. —LBG, GMA News
