Robredo, LP solons draw flak over photo at holocaust memorial in Germany

Vice President Leni Robredo and several Liberal Party  lawmakers drew criticisms from netizens particularly those supportive of the Duterte administration after they posed for a photo at a holocaust memorial in Germany.

The picture showed Robredo and others in the picture smiling at the monument meant to remember the millions of Jews who fell victim to Adolf Hitler's Third Reich.

The photo was posted on Twitter by Ifugao Representative Teddy Baguilat Jr. but he has since taken it down.

Aside from Robredo and Baguilat, included in the picture were Quezon City Representative Jose Christopher "Kit" Belmonte, Dinagat Islands Representative Kaka Bag-ao, Marikina Representative Miro Quimbo, former Budget Secretary Florencio Abad, and LP president Senator Francis Pangilinan.

"We posed at the Holocaust Memorial not to demean the place. But I took down the tweet immediately so as not to hurt sensibilities," Baguilat said in his tweet.

Baguilat has apologized for the post.

"We, as human rights advocates, fully understand the plight experienced by Jews under the Nazis and we would be the last to disrespect their memory, in the same way that we condemn injustice anywhere in the world, including our own country," Baguilat said.

The lawmaker said LP was willing to listen to all opinions.

"We are appreciative of the countless advocates of human rights for sharing their thoughts. I hope this will make others express their outrage over the EJKs," Baguilat said.

He said that the trip was paid for by a foundation in Germany. He said the participants "shared democratic values."

GMA News Online has also reached out to Robredo's camp for comment but has not received a response as of posting. —NB, GMA News
