Duterte says he has removed quota on rice importation

President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday announced that he has lifted the limit on rice importation paving the way for the government to acquire  a robust inventory.

"Kaya ditong sa rice, with our experience sa rice. There was really no shortage. So the best way, I said, to address this problem is I will fill my inventory," he said.

"I was mad because the inventory was --- it was either half-full or half-empty. It was --- hanggang diyan lang ‘yun," he added.

Duterte underscored the need to store an ample supply of rice, which would be made available.

"Sabi ko, “guys, I want to see rice up there. Touching the ceiling of this warehouse. Now,”  he said.

He underscored that rice traders should not be deterred by corrupt practices.

"And to the traders in the business, I have done away with the quota-quota. You can import rice, all of you. No more paperwork. And if there is somebody from the NHA, BIR, Customs who would ask, asking money from you, slap him. [Try to?] slap him," he added. — with Virgil Lopez/BAP, GMA News
