Retired Batanes Bishop Camilo Gregorio dies, 77


Retired Bishop Camilo Gregorio of the Prelature of Batanes died Monday evening, according to a post on the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) website.

Batanes prelature’s Vicar General Fr. Deo Layug said Gregorio died of cardiac arrest at about 9:10pm. He was 77.

Gregorio has been confined at the Cardinal Santos Hospital in San Juan City due to pneumonia since May 9 and that he also suffered a mild stroke last Thursday while undergoing dialysis treatment.

Gregorio was the fourth prelate of Batanes which he served for almost 14 years until he retired in May 2017.

The prelate was ordained priest for the Diocese of San Jose in Nueva Ecija in 1963 after he finished his theology studies at the University of Santo Tomas.

Gregorio was named rector of the Maria Assumpta Seminary in Cabanatuan from 1971 to 1974, assistant secretary in the Apostolic Nunciature in 1984.

In 1987, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Cebu. Two years later, he became the bishop of Bacolod. — BAP, GMA News
