National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Chief Director Camilo Cascolan on Friday announced that Metro Manila experienced its lowest crime rate since President Rodrigo Duterte began his term in 2016.

Cascolan said at a media forum in Quezon City that the NCRPO only recorded 231 focus crimes from May 14 to May 20, a 29.29 percent decrease from the 329 focus crimes recorded in the same period last year.

The NCRPO PRIO stated that, compared to 2017 figures, murder and homicide decreased from 34 to 33 incidents; physical Injury declined from 85 to 38 incidents; and rape went down from 21 to 15.

Robbery also went down from 63 to 41; theft decreased from 103 to 95; carnapping of motor vehicle lowered from 4 to 1; and carnapping of motorcycle decreased from 19 to 9 incidents.

A total of 1,255 focus crimes were recorded from April 9 to May 20.

“We dedicate all of these to the public, whom we pledged to serve. The NCRPO will continue its efforts in fulfilling our commitment to the Chief PNP PDG Oscar D. Albayalde and to everyone, in making Metro Manila a safer place,” Cascolan said in a statement.

Internal cleansing continues

Meanwhile, the NCRPO has sanctioned a total of 42 police officers since April 19, 2018, as part of its internal cleansing operations.

Two were dismissed from service, two were demoted, 26 were suspended, and 12 others were relieved from post.

The NCRPO also rewarded 31,933 well-performing lawmen.

“I am very generous on giving of awards to deserving and performing police personnel. I know what it feels to be on the field, as I was once like them. I believe that one simple award or recognition is enough to uplift their morale and integrity," Cascolan said.

"But I am tough for those who are lousy and erring. They should pay for their neglience of duty or  for doing illegal activities,” he added. — MDM, GMA News
