Morales arrives at wake of slain Ombudsman prosecutor

Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales visited on Wednesday morning the wake of slain Assistant Special Prosecutor Madonna Joy Ednaco-Tanyag.

Morales arrived at the St. Peter Chapels along Quezon Avenue in Quezon City around 11:30 a.m. to pay her last respects to her 33-year-old subordinate.

Tanyag, who was pregnant at that time, was stabbed three times by suspect Angelito Avenido Jr. along Visayas Avenue, Quezon City on Monday after buying milk tea in the area following her duty at the Sandiganbayan.

Avenido, 31, also known as Moymoy, was a jeepney barker from Bula, Gen. Santos City, and has been residing in Desire Compound in Barangay Culiat in Quezon City prior to his arrest on Monday afternoon.

Quezon City Police District director Chief Superintendent Joselito Esquivel Jr. said Avenido arrived in Metro Manila in March from General Santos City where he is facing another case for stabbing and killing another person.

The QCPD identified robbery as the motive for the attack.

In a statement, Morales praised the QCPD for its swift handling of the case that resulted to the arrest of Avenido.

She also commemorated the service of Tanyag at the anti-graft body.

"ASP Tanyag is known to her colleagues as a hardworking and tough prosecutor handling high profile cases. The Office again expresses its deepest condolences to her family and loved ones," Morales said.

Tanyag has left behind big shoes to fill at the Sandiganbayan where she has been handling several high-profile cases in the Third Division during her short stint as a state prosecutor.

Tanyag served as a member of the prosecution panel in the P900-million Malampaya fund scam, the charges against father-and-son former Vice President Jejomar Binay Sr. and former Makati City mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay Jr., and the criminal case of erstwhile Makati mayor Dr. Elenita Binay, among others. — Joseph Tristan Roxas/MDM, GMA News
