QS World University Rankings: UP remains top university in PHL


The University of the Philippines (UP) remains the top university in the country, the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings showed.

On the global scale, however, UP slid down the world ranking from 367th in 2018 to 384th in the 2019 ranking.

UP got an overall score of 28.8, shedding 4.1 points from its overall score of 32.90 last year.

The QS Higher Education System Strength Rankings highlights the nations with the world’s strongest higher education systems.

There are four areas considered in the study, namely: the ranking based on system strength, access, flagship institution performance, and economic context.

The University of the Philippines, with over 45,000 students and 4,343 academic faculty staff members was described as "the home of diverse colleges" while noting its future developments earmarked towards providing automated services and reaching out to more students in northern Luzon.

UP is one of only four Philippine universities included in the QS World Univeristy Ranking of 1,000 universities.

The other Philippine universities are: Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), which comes in second with world ranking of 651-700, followed by the De La Salle University (DLSU) and the University of Santo Tomas (UST) that has QS World University Ranking, both inside the QS global world ranking of 801-1000.

According to information posted on the QS World University Ranking website, the universities are grouped into bands, starting from 501-510 and continuing until 801-1000 and that precise ranking positions are not published.

UP also placed 75th in the Asian university rankings, which was topped by the National University of Singapore.

The 2019 world ranking listed Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as the top higher learning institution, a rank it held for seven years.
