Sereno returns P5-M vehicle to Supreme Court

Ousted Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno has returned her P5-million service vehicle to the Supreme Court (SC) after her permanent removal from the top judge post.

Lawyer Jojo Lacanilao, one of Sereno’s spokespersons, said she returned the Toyota Land Cruiser to SC custody on Wednesday, a day after her appeal against her ouster was "denied with finality."

"Return of the car to SC is confirmed," Lacanilao said in a text message to reporters.

The purchase of the "luxury" sports utility vehicle formed part of the articles of impeachment against Sereno at the House of Representatives' justice committee, which called the procurement "beyond the norm of the Supreme Court for the Office of the Chief Justice."

But on May 11, before the impeachment charges could be voted upon by the House plenary, Sereno was ousted from the Office of the Chief Justice by a majority vote from her own colleagues in the high tribunal.

The verdict against her over an alleged lack of integrity for a supposed failure to file some mandatory asset declarations attained finality on Tuesday. —Nicole-Anne Lagrimas/KBK, GMA News
