PAO's Acosta wants barangays to help cops in drive against tambay

Public Attorney's Office chief Persida Acosta on Saturday suggested that barangay officials must work with the police in addressing the problem with loiterers (mga tambay).

With the thousands being apprehended in the police campaign against idlers in Metro Manila after President Rodrigo Duterte ordered authorities to step up campaign against "mga tambay"  in the streets, Acosta suggested that barangays should come in and subject violators to counselling.

She also suggested that those apprehended should not be detained at police facilities.

The police, she said, should focus on top crimes such as murder, rape, and other heinous crimes.

Addressing simple violation of local ordinances falls on the barangay, she said.

She also said that in her talk with PNP chief Director General Oscar Albayalde, the top cop expressed openness  to a thorough discussion on the matter.

Also she said that she is planning to talk with the Department of the Interior ang Local Government.

The issue on possible police abuse in the drive against idlers has heightened after the death of Genesis "Tisoy" Argoncillo while inside a police station in Novaliches earlier this week. He was apprehended and detained under the campaign against tambay. —LBG, GMA News
