Robredo says Cha-cha talk ‘untimely’ amid killings, rising prices of goods

It is "untimely" to talk about amending the Constitution when the government is faced with many problems, including the spate of killings as well as the increase in the prices of goods, Vice President Leni Robredo said.

"Mula sa sunod-sunod na patayan, hanggang sa patuloy na pagtaas ng presyo ng bilihin, ang pinakamahalagang usapin para sa mga Pilipino ay kung paano masosolusyonan ng kasalukuyang administrasyon ang mga problemang ito," Robredo said in a statement on Sunday.

She added that amending the Constitution would be a major act that would affect every Filipino and should not be hurried.

Robredo added that Filipinos want their leaders to find solutions to problems such as the rising prices of goods and low wages.

A consultative committee formed to propose amendments to the 1987 Constitution last week approved a draft charter proposing a federal system of government to be submitted to President Rodrigo Duterte, a staunch advocate of federalism.

Critics believe that a shift to federalism may allow Duterte to extend his term and a firmer grip on power, despite Duterte's pronouncements that he has no intention of staying beyond 2022. — BM, GMA News
