NO LONGER FOES

Binay, Trillanes lead Senate hearing on Boracay

Former foes Senators Nancy Binay and Antonio Trillanes IV on Monday led the chamber’s hearing on the issues hounding Boracay and other island destinations in the country.

In her opening speech, Binay said the hearing was called to determine the situation and condition of the country's island destinations  and hear the update of different government agencies tasked to rehabilitate Boracay.

Binay and Trillanes were formerly bitter foes as Trillanes was one of the fiercest critics of Binay's father, former Vice President Jejomar Binay, who was accused of corruption during his stint as Makati City mayor.

In an interview in March, Senator Binay, head of the Senate Committee on Tourism, admitted that being near Trillanes was a "big challenge" to her.

"Siguro ang pinakamalaking challenge na lang dun sa isa, kay Trillanes. Hindi kami nag-uusap, hindi kami naga-eye contact," she said, adding she just looks away every time sees Trillanes.

But two months later, Binay said she and Trillanes have already patched up their differences after he approached her during the last day of session on March 21 before the Holy Week break. She said they had an hour-long talk at the Senators' Lounge at the Senate building in Pasay City.

"Nag-explain lang siya kung ano ang pinanggalingan niya. In-explain na niya dati 'yung sa kudeta, sa Oakwood, nung hindi sumipot 'yung daddy ko," she said, referring to her father's non-participation in the uprisings led by Trillanes, a former Navy officer, during the Arroyo administration.

"Naiintindihan din naman daw niya ako pero ayaw niyang i-force ang sarili niya kasi alam naman n'ya na nakasakit siya," Binay added.

"At least ngayon wala nang ganung awkward moment. Dati more on ilang, ngayon wala na."

Trillanes had described the conversation as "very pleasant," adding he never "had anything against her personally." —KBK, GMA News
