Noynoy on Duterte’s ‘human rights, human lives’ remark: Pwede ba paghiwalayin ’yun?

Former president Benigno Aquino III took a swipe at President Rodrigo Duterte's statement against human rights during his third State of the Nation Address (SONA) last week.

Aquino, on Saturday, said the two things cannot be separated.

"Sabi niya, 'I'm interested with human life rather than human rights,' siyempre alam niyo naman kung saan ako nagmula. Pwede bang paghiwalayin 'yun? Pwede bang, wala kang karapatan, universal nga maski saang parte ng mundo, pare-pareho ang basic na karapatan," Aquino told reporters on the sidelines of the awarding of the 2018 Liberal International Prize for Freedom to detained Senator Leila De Lima.

At his SONA, Duterte lambasted human rights advocates who have criticized his violent war against illegal drugs, saying, "Your concern is human rights, mine is human lives."

Following this, he vowed to keep his anti-narcotics campaign, in which thousands have already died, "relentless and chilling."

Vice President Leni Robredo has also voiced her objection to Duterte's pronouncement, saying that she does not see how one can value human life without valuing human rights. — Anna Felicia Bajo/BM, GMA News
