Lacson: Sara Duterte is my top choice among emerging young leaders

Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte is the top choice of Senator Panfilo Lacson as the next leader of the country.

“Speaking of Mayor Sara Duterte, make no mistake, if the next leader of our country would emerge from the young, fresh, and new faces in national politics ... my top choice right now is Sara Duterte,” Lacson said in his opening statement at the weekly Kapihan sa Senado forum.

He said the young Duterte is strong-willed, stern, vibrant, progressive minded, and has good leadership qualities.

But Lacson said he does not mean that there are no emerging young leaders in the Senate, but the Davao mayor stands out from the pack.

“A number of our young, hardworking colleagues are showing good leadership potentials. This is my political opinion based on whatever political sense I have accumulated after my long years in government service, Mayor Sara stands out and is right in front of the pack,” he said.

Asked by reporters, Lacson clarified that he is not endorsing Duterte.

“No, I’m not endorsing her. I’m just saying that among the known young leaders, if we will choose from young and fresh we can say na si Sara talaga ‘yung tinitignan natin,” he said.

“Not only because she is a daughter of the President pero because of track record and experience as a local government official in Davao,” he added.

On Tuesday, President  Rodrigo Duterte said his daughter would not seek any national elective post.

“Ang anak ko, si Inday, I can tell you I know her. Hindi magtatakbo ‘yan ng national,” the President said in a speech during the 68th National Security Council and 69th National Intelligence Coordinating Agency founding anniversary celebration in Pasay City.

Sara Duterte is now on her second term as mayor of Davao City, where the President ruled for over two decades before he became the country’s chief executive in 2016.  — RSJ, GMA News
