House OKs bill seeking a 10-day paid incentive leave for workers

The House of Representatives has passed a proposed measure seeking a 10-day paid incentive leave yearly for employees.

A "24-Oras" report on Friday evening by JP Soriano said the chamber passed HB 6377 on the third and final reading.

At present, the Labor Code of the Philippines (Republic Act 7322) only provides for a 5-day paid incentive leave.

HB 6377 seeks to amend RA 7322, adding five more days to the annual incentive leave.

Workers need more time for their personal and their families' needs, the report said.

On the other hand, the report said some small businesses expressed fears that the bill, once passed by Congress, will affect their business, but said they can't help but follow the law.

Aside from the present 5-day incentive leave, a woman employee is entitled to a 60-day maternity leave for normal delivery, and 78 days in case of cesarean delivery.

Male employees are also entitled to a 7-day paternity leave. There is also a 10-day leave for women who are victims of abuse, a 7-day parental leave for solo parents, and special leave for women with gynecological condition.

In reaction to the House approval of the HB 6377, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said that he hopes Congress will pass the bill. —LBG, GMA News
