Duterte conference with AFP, PNP postponed due to preps for Ompong

President Rodrigo Duterte’s monthly meeting with top security officials on Friday was canceled in light of the government’s preparations for the onslaught of Typhoon Ompong in Luzon this weekend, Malacañang and the Department of National Defense said.

Duterte was supposed to lead the joint command conference with the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police at 4 p.m. Friday in the presidential palace, a day after he presided over a meeting with Cabinet members and other government officials on typhoon preparations.

“The joint command conference was canceled because of the preparation for the typhoon. Instead the [inter-agency] National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council was convened [on Thursday],” Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said in a text message.

Lorenzana said there is no new date yet for the joint AFP-PNP command conference where peace and order concerns and other issues matters affecting the military and police are usually discussed.

Other government officials had also participated in previous joint command conferences including Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Jesus Dureza and Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III. —NB, GMA News
