Saguisag to Enrile: Are you afraid of Bongbong’s revenge?

Former Senator Rene Saguisag cried foul over the claims of former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile that the latter only defected from the Marcos administration due to a threat of a military junta, saying that Enrile had admitted to cheating for Marcos during the 1986 polls, among other things.

“He (Enrile) said he had cheated Cory with 300,000 votes in Cagayan, and that the ambush on him in September 1972 was fake. And now, it's 2018 and this. Natatakot ba siya na maging susunod na pangulo si Bongbong kaya he is brown nosing Bongbong now? Para di siya gantihan dahil tinanggal sa poder ang matandang Marcos?” Saguisag said in an interview on GMA News TV's News To Go, referring to the 1986 snap elections between Corazon Aquino and then incumbent President Ferdinand Marcos.

Cagayan is the home province of Enrile, while Bongbong is former Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., the son and namesake of the late strongman.

Enrile’s claims were made in a video posted on Bongbong’s Facebook page.

Bongbong lost the 2016 vice presidential race to then-Rep. Maria Leonor Robredo of Camarines Sur by 263,473 votes. At present, Bongbong’s protest remains pending with the Presidential Electoral Tribunal.

Enrile, on the other hand, served as the elder Marcos's Justice Chief and Defense Minister before Enrile and then-Lieutenant General Fidel Ramos defected from Marcos that eventually led to the 1986 EDSA uprising which ousted Marcos and catapulted Cory Aquino to the presidency.

“Itong si Bongbong at Manong Johnny, pag nag-uusap, nagsisinungaling eh. Gumagalaw ang mga labi. Nagbobolahan eh. Manong Johnny, historical revisionism 'yan. Self-serving,” Saguisag added.

Saguisag also dismissed Enrile's claims that then President Cory did not know anything about governance, saying that any President would need good Cabinet members to be able to govern welll.

“Matagal na issue 'yan. '85 at '86 na kampanya pa. Na walang alam [si Cory]. Walang alam sa pangungurakot, pandarambong at pang-aabuso ng karapatang pantao. And the people elected her,” said Saguisag, who once served as Cory’s spokesperson.

“Anybody who will be President would have to rely on a good Cabinet, and Cory’s Cabinet [members] sparkled with wisdom,” he added. — Llanesca T. Panti/RSJ, GMA News
