Duterte names replacement for sacked OGCC chief Jurado

President Rodrigo Duterte has named the replacement for lawyer Rudolf Philip Jurado who was fired by the chief executive in May as head of the Office of the Government Corporate Counsel.

Duterte promoted Deputy Government Corporate Counsel Elpidio Vega to the post vacated by Jurado, according to appointment paper signed on September 27 but released by Malacañang on Monday.

Jurado, a son of a former magistrate, got the axe on May 28 for allegedly issuing a legal opinion that would justify the grant of a 75-year gaming franchise to a free port locator in Aurora.

Duterte criticized Jurado's supposed legal opinion that the Aurora Pacific Economic Zone (APECO) can issue online gambling permits outside its territorial jurisdiction.

Days before he was fired by the President, Jurado said there was no corruption involved in the legal opinion he rendered as regards APECO.

Jurado disputed the allegations made by anonymous lawyers from within the office he leads, alleging some subordinates received "secret" allowances from state-owned corporations.

Duterte, meanwhile, renewed the appointments of special envoys Monica "Nikki" Teodoro (United Nations Children's Fund), Dante Ang (international public relations), Abdullah Mama-o (Kuwait) and Jose De Venecia Jr. (intercultural dialogue and Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation).

The President also appointed Datu Ras Sinsuat Lidasan Jr. and National Youth Commission Chairperson Ronald Cardema as National Commission on Muslim Filipinos commissioner and NYC representative to the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board. —KBK, GMA News
