Filipino participants bag 20 medals in Asian Choir Games


Ten Filipino choirs bagged 20 medals and won top awards in the recently-concluded 1st Asian Choir Games held at Jakarta, Indonesia. Competition results posted at the Asian Choir Games website showed the choral groups brought home 10 gold medals, nine silvers and a bronze award. The website said the 1st Asian Choir Games Jakarta 2007, dubbed as the Asia Pacific Olympics for choirs, is the largest international event for amateur choirs in Asia. The competition was held at “JI Jakarta International Expo" Centre from November 2 to 10. Davao-based choir group "The Himig Singers" was declared champion in Mixed Vocal Ensembles category in the Asian Choir Championship. Similarly, the "Cebu Chamber Singers" won the top awards in both the Mixed Chamber Choirs and Gospel and Spiritual categories, while the Coro de Sta. Cecilia was the category winner in Musica Sacra a capella in the Asian Open. The other winners in the Asian Open were OICT Chorale for Mixed Youth choirs; Coro de Sta. Cecilia for Mixed Vocal Ensembles category; Xavier University Glee Club for Mixed Chamber Choirs category; and The Southridge Boys' Choir for Folklore category who all received silver medals. The Southridge Boys' Choir also received bronze medal for Mixed Youth Choirs category. Filipino choir groups also ruled various categories in the Asian Choir championship. Gold medals were awarded the Mandaue School for the Arts Children's Choir for the Children's Choir, Music of the Religions and Folklore ctegories; Lyceum of the Philippines University Chorale for Mixed Youth Choirs and Musica Sacra a Capella categories; and Hail Mary the Queen Children's Choir in Gospel and Spiritual category. The Hail Mary the Queen Children's Choir and Olongapo Youth Choir received silver medals each in the Musica Sacra a Capella category. Hail Mary the Queen Children's Choir also received another silver medal in the Musica Contemporanea category. Olongapo Youth Choir also bagged silver in the Gospel and Spiritual category and so is Lyceum of the Philippines University Chorale in the Folklore category. Hail Mary the Queen Children’s Choir - whose youngest member is only nine years old - arrived at Ninoy Aquino International Airport 5:20 a.m. Tuesday on board a Cebu Pacific flight. Jude Roldan, the choir conductor, thanked all the people who believed and prayed for their success. He added despite the young age of the choir members their talents emerged against the older and more experienced competitors.
