Workers recall Nene Pimentel’s contributions to sector's cause

Labor groups on Sunday called to mind the contributions of former Senate President Nene Pimentel Jr. to the sector, afters reports of his death on Sunday morning.

In a statement, Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) said that “workers owe a lot” to the late senator, calling him as the nation’s conscience and democracy defender during the time of “dictatorship.”

“His lifelong struggle for political democracy and economic democracy inspires the TUCP and the entire working class to never give up and to never surrender. He will be missed,” it said.

TUCP cited Nene Pimentel’s contribution such as authoring Local Government Code to ensure genuine autonomy and self-direction for local governments.

Also, the TUCP said, the former senator also authored the Cooperative Code of the Philippines and the Charter of the Charter of the Cooperative Development Authority that empowers workers by sharing finances together to help each other and protect them from economic exploitation.

Meanwhile, Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN) paid tribute to Nene Pimentel and cited his role in fighting dictatorship and voting against the retention of US bases in our country.

“In his long life as public servant, he stood for human rights, good governance and national sovereignty,” BAYAN said in a statement.

“Salamat, Ka Nene sa iyong napakaraming makabuluhang kontribusyon sa bayan! Kami ay magpapatuloy,” BAYAN added. —Joviland Rita/LBG, GMA News
