Number of injured from Mindanao quake climbs to 208 – NDRRMC

The number of people injured due to the 6.3-magnitude earthquake that struck Mindanao last Wednesday rose to 208 on Sunday night, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

In its Sunday-6 p.m. update, the NDRRMC said a total of 4,151 families or 20,755 people from 79 barangays were affected by the quake.

Majority of the 208 injured were from Regions XI, XII, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, with most of the injuries merely minor.

The number of deaths remained at 6.

Meanwhile, a total of 2,995 infrastructures were damaged by the quake. Of this number, 2,494 were partially damaged and 482 were totally damaged.

As of 1 p.m. Sunday, 671 aftershocks with magnitudes ranging from 1.5 to 5.5 were recorded.

NDRRMC Spokesperson Mark Timbal told reporters that the agency’s chief, Undersecretary Ricardo Jalad, provided P20 thousand worth of assistance to families affected in Magsaysay, Davao del Sur.

“Kahapon (Saturday), pumunta si Usec. Jalad sa Magsaysay, Davao del Sur. Part of his support in that area is meron siyang tinurn over sa mga victims na P20 thousand worth ng assistance for the reconstruction of houses. Nagbigay na po tayo ng financial assistance din dun but that was through NHA, National Housing Authority,” he said.

Timbal added that authorities were still assessing the damage to determine the cost of rehabilitation.

“Once the damage assessment has been completed, part of the recommendations there will be the programming for reconstruction, so the most likely po, the funds might be from both the local and national government,” he said.

The NDRRMC was hoping that the reconstruction costs would not reach the P1-billion mark.
