SC issues writ of habeas corpus for 3 suspects in Batasan blast

The Supreme Court on Friday said it issued a writ of habeas corpus on petition of the families of Caidar Aunal, Adham Kusain, and Ikram Indama, the alleged perpetrators of the Batasan Complex bombing last November 13. In a two-page resolution, the Supreme Court En Banc required the Philippine National Police’s (PNP) Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), National Capital Region-Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (NCR-CIDU) and the PNP Custodial Center to make returns of the said writs before Quezon City Regional Trial Court Executive Judge Romeo Zamora on December 18. The High Court also directed the Zamora to hear the petition on the same date at 8:30 a.m. Habeas corpus is a legal action that gives a person the right to seek relief from unlawful detention. It serves as an instrument for the safeguarding of individual freedom against arbitrary government action. In their SC petition, the families of the three accused questioned the suspects’ continued detention in Camp Crame, claiming that they were being illegally detained and held incommunicado. Aunal and Kusain are detained at the PNP Custodial Center while Indama is being held at the NCR-CIDU. The suspects’ families said that the three were arrested last November 15 for obstruction of justice and were only later charged for the Batasan blast. The Department of Justice (DOJ) has charged the three before the QC RTC for multiple murder and obstruction of justice for their alleged involvement in the Batasan Complex bombing that killed Basilan Rep. Wahab Akbar and four others. - GMANews.TV
