Women’s group to conduct own ‘visita iglesia’

Several women's organization on Saturday morning will begin their own version of the traditional Lenten "visita iglesia" and will be gracing 14 parish churches in Metro Manila. Led by woman's group Babae Para sa Kaunlaran (BABAE-KA), the "alternative" Lenten celebration is aimed at seeking "spiritual guidance and adherence to the rule of law," according to BABAE-KA president Ruth Vasquez. Dubbed the "Way of the Cross, Path to Healing," the women will be using an "alternative" version of the Roman Catholic's Stations of the Cross to recreate Jesus Christ's last few hours on earth. The religious event, which coincides with the celebration of the International Women's Day, is likewise geared toward the attainment of peace, unity and sobriety, the group added. "Prayers and Holy Mass are offered for good intentions, not to be used for ranting political discourse similar to what groups opposed to the present administration is doing," Vasquez said. On Sunday, the group will also hold a prayer rally at the Liwasang Bonifacio in Manila before marching toward the Mendiola Bridge while praying the rosary. Babae Ka members were also among the protesters who trooped to Welcome Rotonda in Quezon City to participate in a prayer-vigil as an answer to anti-Arroyo groups' mass-up at Makati City at the same day. From morning until late afternoon, the group prayed the rosary 10 times and recited the Hail Mary 2,000 times, with the aim of holding a "peaceful" protest. Also coming up with their own "prayer petitions," the group, each time they would complete a rosary prayer, recited a specific plea seeking God's assistance in solving specific economic and political problems hounding the country. - GMANews.TV
