DFA: PHL, Thailand to strengthen fight vs drugs, human trafficking

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said the Philippines and Thailand have reaffirmed their commitment to fight against illegal drugs and human trafficking. In a press statement released on Tuesday, the DFA said Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario met with Thailand Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya on April 10 at the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Special Informal Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on the East Asia Summit (EAS) in Bangkok. In their meeting, the two officials relayed their respective countries' commitment to strengthen bilateral relations, especially in their common resolve against drugs and human trafficking. Del Rosario underscored the importance of cooperation against drug trafficking because drug mules are becoming a serious challenge for the Philippines. The Philippines and Thailand will look into comprehensive intelligence sharing, including through the United Nations, Interpol and ASEAN, the DFA said. Intelligence sharing is proposed for discussion at the upcoming 5th Philippines-Thailand Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) to be held in Manila this year. The other areas to be discussed are cooperation in agriculture, education, trade and investments, tourism, energy, disaster management, as well as developments in ASEAN. The Ministers also discussed continuing assistance to Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Viet Nam, especially through investments and joint ventures to attain the region's vision of building a strong ASEAN Community by 2015, the DFA said. – VVP, GMA News
