Film on first Pinoy hero Lapu-Lapu shown in Portugal

A full-length feature film on the life of the first Filipino hero Lapu-Lapu, who led a battle against Portuguese explorer and conqueror Ferdinand Magellan, was shown in Lisbon, Portugal. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said the showing of the film on Lapu-Lapu was part of the Filipinos' celebration of Philippine National Heroes' Day on August 25. Lapu-Lapu (1491–1542) was a ruler in Mactan in the Visayas. He is recognized as the first Philippine hero for being the first known native to have resisted the Spanish colonization. On April 27, 1521, Lapu-Lapu led 1,500 Muslim warriors in a battle against Portuguese Magellan who led about 49 soldiers during the Battle of Mactan. Magellan and several of his men were killed. According to the DFA, Ambassador Teresita Barsana "enjoined the Filipino community to reacquaint themselves with the role played by the Filipino heroes in the country´s transformation, as she highlighted the hard work and the contribution of overseas Filipino workers as modern-day heroes to national development." Aside from the film showing on the life of Lapu-Lapu, "photos and brief biographies of various Filipino heroes such as Andres Bonifacio, Apolinario Mabini, Marcelo Del Pilar, Emilio Jacinto, Sultan Kudarat, Fathers Gomez, Burgos and Zamora, Juan Luna and Emilio Aguinaldo, among others, were displayed at the Philippine Embassy," the DFA said. The Filipino community that joined the celebration was led by Lani Yu, president of the Associação Filipino-Portuguesa. - VVP, GMA News
