Pinoys to gather for Kalihi Festival in Hawaii Nov. 19

Celebrating the multi-ethnicity of the Hawaiian district of Kalihi, the Filipino Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii Foundation will lead the annual block party, “A Taste of Kalihi Festival," on Nov. 19. Now on its fifth year, the celebration—the Chamber’s partnership with the City and County of Honolulu—highlights the district’s history and culture, in an effort to lure in patrons and investors to help boost Kalihi’s economic base. Kalihi is a district west of downtown Honolulu that attracted working-class residents with its nearness to the city and affordable housing. It started luring in migrants at the beginning of the 1900s. Together with the locals, these foreigners helped form the community within the area, which is maintained up to this day. The festival will feature Kalihi-based businesses and community organizations, as well as a sampling of the wide array of cuisines in the district, which includes Filipino, Korean, and Japanese. The celebration will also suit the whole family with various activities and entertainment like live bands, cultural and modern dances, and Hawaii’s largest electric slide dance. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Colburn St., corner of Dillingham Blvd. and McNeil St. For more information, visit the Filipino Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii Foundation’s website (www.filipinochamber.org) or contact Chairperson Eddie Agas at (808) 783-3327 or at filipinochamberhi@gmail.com. - VVP, GMA News
