Cesar Guarin ends Australia leg of global run

After 41 days and more than 2,000 kilometers, Filipino ultra-marathoner Cesar Guarin finished the Australia leg of his Global Run last week.   Guarin and his team were welcomed by the Filipino community as they ran to the finish line at the Mulgrave Park in Brisbane, Australia last Monday. Guarin is set to return to the Philippines on Wednesday and will be gearing up for the Middle East leg of his ultra-marathon next year.   This is the fifth leg of Guarin’s Global Run, which he embarked on after an injury disqualified him from joining the Olympics.   The alumnus of the University of the Philippines has run more than 11, 500 kilometers for the first four legs of his ultra-marathon, listed below: * Trans Pilipinas in 1983, * Trans USA in 1985, * Trans Europe in 1992, and * US-Canada in 2009.   The Global Run is expected to end in 2016.   In an interview with GMA News Online before he left for Australia last October, Guarin said the Australia leg is the first part of the Global Run that he would dedicate to raise funds for “Batang Pangarap,” the sports development program they offer to get poor and abandoned children off the streets.    The Australia leg aimed to raise around $200, 000.   “I think it will be a good way to help less fortunate children, if we get them interested na mangarap. Karamihan kasi wala nang pangarap, [gusto lang] mag-survive,” he said in a phone interview. “We want to [build their] interest in life, to aspire.” - VVP, GMA News
