14-year-old Fil-Am killed herself over school bullying?

Students and school authorities were shocked to learn that a 14-year-old Filipino-American in New York allegedly killed herself because of school bullying, the news site The Filipino Reporter said.   Eira Fatima Maghuyop, a freshman at The Ursuline School in New Rochelle, New York, reportedly hung herself in the bathroom of their house in Yonkers.   On its report last Friday, the news site Filipino Reporter quoted an item from newrochelletalk.com, which said: “She reportedly left a note explaining her reasons for committing suicide and, though the note was not released, her parents mentioned bullying as a reason.”   But the Yonkers Police “said in a statement that they had found no concrete evidence to indicate that bullying was a factor” in Maghuyop’s death, the report added.   For her part, Eileen Davidson, principal of Ursuline, issued a statement last February 3, saying that Maghuyop “loved our school and was fully engaged in [its] campus life.”   The school, meanwhile, met with parents to discuss what exactly happened “and what is being done to help Maghuyop’s family,” the Filipino reporter said.   An update from the newrochelletalk.com article read: “Parents were told that Maghuyop had a normal day and appeared happy, that there was no history of bullying or any bullying incident reported that day, that she had already laid out her clothes for the next day. Parents were told there was a note, that the note mentioned bullying but that there was a specific, dominant reason cited in Maghuyop’s note.”   In her Tumblr site, the 14-year-old, who described herself as “100% Filipino,” wrote that she goes to an all-girls’ Catholic school, “which is nice because there are no boys.”   “I really like my school and my teachers since they are really nice to me. It’s the work that I can’t stand,” she added.   Maghuyop—who dreamed of becoming a musician, doctor, or nurse—likewise cited reasons why “I really do not like my siblings,” which included “No respect for their only sister” and “They don’t even listen to me.”   “I don’t seem like I have any confidence to do anything but once you get to know me, I do. I love telling jokes to my friends… I love laughing and making someone else laugh. I love fooling around,” she wrote. - VVP, GMA News
