Fil-Am to receive 2012 Monarch leadership award in US June 3

Filipino-American Leah Laxamana will be one of the recipients of the 2012 Monarch Leadership Awards in the United States on June 3. According to the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), Laxamana will receive the award from the Pacific Asian American Women Bay Area Coalition (PAAWBAC) in San Francisco. In a news release, DFA said Laxamana is a member of the Filipino Women's Network (FWN). She also served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Honduras from 2006 to 2008 where she actively promoted women's rights and gender equity.

Laxama and the other awardees will be feted at the Intercontinental San Francisco Hotel, the DFA said.

"Ms. Laxamana serves as an inspiration to our kababayans to achieve greater heights. She has brought pride to our community and I hope that through her, many of our youths will follow their passions and actively contribute to the development of our communities, both here in the US and in the Philippines," said Philippine Consul General to San Francisco Marciano Paynor Jr.

PAAWBAC was founded in 1980 to promote the personal, professional and political development of API women.

With "The Young and the Rising" as this year's theme, the awards seek to honor the next generation of emerging Asian Pacific Islander (API) women leaders who inspire those around them at a young age. - VVP, GMA News
