Pinoy bags top prize at Scrabble championship in UAE

A Filipino in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) bagged the top prize in the 2012 Annual Gulf Scrabble Championship on Saturday.

Ronald Credo beat 25 other contestants from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) by winning 13 of the 15 games at the tournament, the news site Khaleej Times reported on Sunday. Credo, a civil engineer, told Khaleej Times that started playing when he was 10 years old when he started playing Scrabble, a word game.

He explained that he "started competitively playing in 1999” and has since won awards in the international circle.
Credo said he loved to learn new words and read reference books like SOWPODS Word Lists.

He said players need to learn strategies when playing Scrabble. "I learned a lot from watching players play as well. Learning Rack Balance, creating hook words, and other techniques in scrabble make you a better player,” he told Khaleej Times.
