Ateneo law students win intl law moot court tilt


The Philippines, represented by the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) Law School, won the "Asia Cup 2012" international law moot court competition in Tokyo, Japan from August 20 to 21. A news release of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Friday said members of the Ateneo Society of International Law won the "Best Team" and "Best Memorial" awards. The International Law Moot Court Competition "Asia Cup" is a moot court competition where students from Asian countries demonstrate their ability in writing memorials and presenting oral pleadings on a fictitious lawsuit on international human rights and humanitarian laws. The team members are:
  • Angela Abalal;
  • Vincent Aureus (team captain);
  • Nonalyn Superable;
  • Jericho Tiu, and
  • Lauren Toledo.
The team was coached by Atty. Domnina Rances and Atty. Jose Victornino Salud. In the individual competition, the following Ateneans also won awards:
  • Jericho Tiu - Overall Best Oralist;
  • Lauren Toledo - 4th Best Oralist,
  • Angela Abala - 6th Best Oralist, and
  • Nonalyn Superable - 7th Best Oralist.
The Philippines has won the Asia Cup the most number of times, winning in eight tournaments since 1999.  The Ateneo won the Asia Cup in 1999, 2002, 2008, and 2012. The University of the Philippines won the Asia Cup in 2000, 2003, 2007, and 2009.
 
The participating universities this year also included Universitas Gadjah Mada ALSA LC of Indonesia, Chulalongkorn University of Thailand, Singapore Management University of Singapore, Peking University of China, Soongsil University of the Republic of Korea, Kathmandu School of Law of Nepal, the Diplomatic Academy of Viet Nam, and Sophia University and Waseda University of Japan.
 
Hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan since 2003, the International Law Moot Court is highly regarded among the Asian international law circles. The competition fosters cross-cultural experiences and promotes mutual understanding among the delegations from Asian countries and Japanese participants. It is also an "outstanding occasion [for] international cooperation in human rights education and dissemination of international human rights and humanitarian treaties," the DFA said. - VVP, GMA News
