Facebook helps save abused Pinay maid in UAE

The social networking site Facebook helped save an abused Filipino housemaid from an indecent proposal and attempted rape by her employer, a UAE-based news site reported on Friday.

While her employer threatened to have her jailed if she told authorities, the Filipina called her sister-in-law who in turn wrote about the maid's predicament on Facebook, a report of Khaleej Times said.  According to the maid, identified only as "C. Dumo," her employer attempted to rape her last May 9 at his house in Ras Al Khaimah in the UAE. She told Khaleej Times how she fought back when her employer "slapped me many times, picked me up and threw me on the floor.  I became very scared but I did not lose my senses. I got the chance to open the door and leave. He tried to pull me back to the room but with God’s help I was able to run away fast.”
The maid's story maid made the rounds on Facebook. Eliese Pua Palilio, creator of the community group Tropang Walang Iwanan, posted a picture of Dumo on Facebook with an appeal for help on Monday.

The plea, which was shared 5,207 times on the Facebook, had the plea: “To all OFWs (Overseas Filipino Workers) in the UAE, please help us notify the embassy.” The maid said a Filipina named Maribel came to her rescue after her sister-in-law posted her number on Facebook.

The maid eventually took refuge at the Overseas Filipino Resource Center (OFRC) of the Philippine Consulate General in Dubai on Tuesday, the report added.
Philippine welfare officer Maybelle Gorospe, who is handling Dumo's case, said the maid did not want to file a case against her employer.

The maid said she just wanted to be with her husband and their three-year-old son in the Philippines.

Gorospe said the POLO will try to retrieve Dumo’s passport and book her a flight home.

The Khaleej Times report said Filipinos in the UAE who need help can call the consulate’s helpline on 056 273 2611. - VVP, GMA News
