4 cargo forwarders face charges over undelivered ‘balikbayan’ boxes

Four cargo forwarding companies are now in hot water for their failure to deliver "balikbayan" boxes.

In a statement Thursday, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) said it learned of the companies' activities after it received numerous complaints from overseas Filipinos.

These companies, including their Manila counterparts, are the following:

  • Philbox Direct Ltd. (United Kingdom) and Springer International (PH)
  • Al Rodah Marine Cargo (United Arab Emirates) and D'Winner Logistics Phil. Inc. (PH)
  • Kabalen Forwarders (Saudi Arabia)
  • ADC Spedition Services (Germany)
Springer Int'l. and D'Winner Logistics Phil. Inc. are now facing criminal and administrative charges, which will lead to the revocation of their DTI accreditation, the statement read.

Charges were also filed against ADC Spedition Services for failing to deliver numerous balikbayan boxes from Filipinos in Germany, and for operating without DTI accreditation.

The DTI is now coordinating with the Department of Justice and the Bureau of Immigration to put the operator of ADC Spedition Services under the government's watchlist. The operator faces cases of estafa and swindling from individuals who availed of ADC's services beforehand.

“The DTI enjoins consumers to be careful in their transactions on Balikbayan boxes and be watchful for bogus sea freight forwarders," said DTI-Consumer Protection Group Undersecretary Victorio Dimagiba.

Concerned Filipino workers may check their freight agents' status on the DTI's website while those with lost, pilfered, or undelivered items may file complaints by person or through their contact details. — Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
