OFW Guide: Beware of e-mail scam promising jobs in Canada

Filipinos seeking overseas employment have been warned of a new e-mail scam supposedly offering jobs in Canada.

Receivers of the e-mail are promised a job as a nurse and caregiver in Canadian Virtual Hospice in Winnipeg, Canada, according to the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) in a Facebook post.

“If you receive this e-mail, do not entertain,” the POEA said.

The agency noted that the recipient of the e-mail is told that he/she has been chosen as eligible to apply for the position in Canadian Virtual Hospice after posting his/her resumè in an online job portal.

The e-mail also said applying for the job has no hidden charges to the applicants as the employer is already set to shoulder the airfare, work permit fee and working visa fee.

However, the applicant is required to pay coaching and medical exam fees to any of their accredited payment center to be able to reserve a slot for the embassy coaching set March 22 and 23.

“The only expenses that you are going to shoulder are the medical exam fee and Canadian Virtual Hospice Embassy Coaching fee because this is on a Direct/Name Hire Basis,” the e-mail said.

It added that attending the supposed “once-a-year only” two-day Canadian Virtual Hospice Embassy Coaching is one of the few requirements for the job.

In 2012, the POEA had warned the public against a new form of illegal recruitment in the form of immigration consultants and visa coaching. — KBK, GMA News
